Farewell To Blogging But Not To Plugging In With GPS™️

Wednesday, February 26, 2020

{This article is ad-supported.}

This is a bitter-sweet blog for me as it is the last article that I will be writing under my Plugging In With GPS™️ umbrella. I had been blogging since October 2018. Many of you know that I also created and host a podcast platform. It’s a digital medium that shall continue.

Writing is one of my gifts. Make no mistake; I have not and will not abandon it. I absolutely love to weave words to edify and satisfy my audiences. I’m often complimented and I wholeheartedly appreciate the comments and loyalty. As you know, I’m also a published author. My coauthor and I published our 1st book in a series in November 2019. Yay! We’re still celebrating as it’s our memoir and although it was not a cakewalk to write, it was an experience that she and I top-shelve as one of our most rewarding “sisterly love” experiences. We discovered things about one another while writing our memoir. Imagine that! We surely did not think that was possible because we have been talking and visiting one another regularly for over 40 years. We have even traveled domestically and internationally together. We admire and love one another even more now since our writing project began. It happens; we are proof that learning and loving can grow. We are grateful to GOD for guiding us to the finish line, completing our first book of many. HE graced us with HIS whispers of encouragement and wisdom to never give up. HE knew that the book was important for several reasons. We not only honored our Mother, we honored HIM while encouraging others to be better than their yesterdays and certainly not to ever give up on life’s possibilities along their journey.

I’ve written a children’s book that will be published in the near future. My older grandson will be helping me with the illustration selections. I wrote about him. Eventually, I’ll write a book about him and his brother who was born this year. I write for others: publicly and privately. To protect their privacy, I won’t disclose names but I openly divulge that I will be writing for a digital magazine that will be accessible this year for your reading pleasure. I also will be writing for a well-known university and a women’s shoes designer. I will share details on my podcast at the appropriate time. I’ve also been asked to write or co-write someone’s autobiography. I accepted and look forward to extending my literary work.

I do not want to deprive my audiences in the U.S., Canada, Asia, Jamaica, United Arab Emirates, Italy, Germany, Japan, UK and other regions around the globe of the enjoyment of Goya’s unique style and candor. Therefore, you will still experience my “beauty in the details” style but just on my podcast episodes now. Yes; even my Goya’s Honoring Women Series and Goya’s Honoring Men Series will be represented in my podcast. The acknowledgment shall continue as so many women and men deserve to be honored for their unselfish and committed contributions to their families, communities, state, country and therefore, the world. People benefit in the masses from their decision to make a difference to impact others’ lives. It is my intent to always applaud and support deserving peopleout loud”!!

To further feed my love for writing in addition to other work that I was doing, I started blogging for that reason. My blog page address was 1goya.blogspot.com. You can still access my articles there. I later joined the WordPress bloggers. You can continue to access my archived articles on this stage; I won’t be terminating my WordPress account:

⭐️ Goya’s Honoring Women Series: Who Is Being Honored?

{All of my articles are ad-supported.}

Saturday, January 11, 2020

When I created “Goya’s Honoring Women Series: Who Is Being Honored?” one year ago for my Plugging In With GPS™️ platform, I knew that it would never be difficult to find women to honor because there are so many phenomenal women around the globe. The honored women are from all walks of life who contribute “positively” to their family, community, city, state, and/or country. The world is a better place because of them. There is no bias relative to race, ethnicity, religion nor political ideology. I respect and believe in the power of a woman and my honoring women series is not only designed to embrace women but to encourage all women to empower and celebrate one another. I, without reservation, take the lead. I support deserving women out loud and proud!

When a woman is intentional without default, empowered by her relentless innovated spirit to help others along her journey, equipped with intelligence and motivation to succeed, she has quite a powerhouse combination. I just described a Plugging In With GPS™️ honoree. Meet PHYLICIA JASMIN, my 32nd honoree.

I’ll start with Phylicia’s impressive resumé by informing you in advance that I’m providing an abbreviated version on this stage. She’s a young woman who already has a long list of accolades and accomplishments. I can safely say that her autobiography is certainly set on full speed ahead already and she’s only on chapter one.

As I read several articles about Phylicia written by reliable sources and posted on social media outlets, it was obvious to me that she has a positive attitude and an out of the box thinking pattern. A positive mind gives off positive vibes. Phylicia’s education and work ethic are extraordinary! She’s a proven team player as one of her tasks was serving as a cohort at the University of North Carolina, working through a curriculum with other students to achieve academic success via the McNair Program.

Upon earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology at UNC, she attended the University of South Carolina as a Master of Social Work student. After completing requirements, she earned the title, Licensed Master Social Worker {LMSW}. She is licensed to provide special skills and knowledge of a Social Worker in the context of mental health therapy for her clients. Phylicia has been a scholarly student during her educational career. Her academic dedication and commitment earned her the MSW Student of the Year Award.

{Left: Phylicia was the Captain of the UNC Dance Team}
{Phylicia: UNC Alum}

Phylicia continually impresses the right people with her leadership qualities—such that she was one of two students nationwide selected for a two-year post-MSW fellowship in advanced clinical social work from the Yale School of Medicine’s Childhood Study Center. “I feel honored to win the award because of the depth and talent of our program. All of my peers are talented and doing amazing things, so it means a lot for me to be selected”, said Phylicia. I quote Clinical Assistant Professor and then Interim MSW Program Coordinator, Rhonda DiNovo, “Phylicia is an outstanding student who is exceptionally smart, a gifted clinician and on track to making a significant difference in the field.” That’s a significant nod from Rhonda.

{Phylicia: UofSC Alum}
{Phylicia: Yale University School of Medicine}

Phylicia is not all work and no play. She knows the importance of letting her hair down for relaxation and having fun. Her social media posts display her zeal for life and love for her inner circle: family and friends.

Living on Purpose: I call it “Lifing”!

{Phylicia posted on Instagram that dancing will forever make her smile.}
{Walking in her purpose “with purpose” and “on purpose”}

Oh—Did I mention that Phylicia is the founder of College by Her, LLC? Well, as I mentioned, she is intentional, empowered and equipped. She posted on social media that her organization is dedicated to helping African American women transform into their first year of college through mentorship and empowerment. It’s an excellent service since it’s no secret that college can be overwhelming for a freshman. College by Her, LLC is a Blessing! Phylicia’s Instagram Post Comment: “I’m reminded that I’m just at the beginning of a lot of my dreams coming true.” Phylicia, No one should doubt that you’ll continue to accomplish your career aspirations, goals and plans. ⭐️Goya’s Honoring Women Series: Who Is Being Honored?

{All of my articles are ad-supported.}

Saturday, December 21, 2019

Honoring women from all walks of life from around the globe is my pleasure. Many women have done extraordinary things and are moving the needle to innovate and inspire others in all groups: men, women and children, demonstrating the importance of helping others along their journey while pursuing their own dreams and aspirations. In my view, no journey is successful if we don’t help with uplifting and elevating others along the way. I honor an extraordinary woman who does just that and she’s been doing it for a very long time.

Ladies and Gentlemen, as we approach the end of 2019 and embark upon a fresh new year, I without hesitation and proudly introduce Honoree, Dale Monica Allen! It’s important to know that Dale is a Christian who not only talks the talk but walks the walk. She displays characteristics of a Christian on a regular basis. I personally know her and have known her all of my life. She’s deserving of being honored and embraced for her philanthropic work that she faithfully does for her church, community, her Family and friends. Dale is benevolent and routinely donates of her time, money and spiritually-laced words of encouragement to support the welfare of others.

{Pictured: Mrs. Dale Monica Allen, a woman of grace who wears a graceful smile}

When Dale is not dedicating her time to her Family and church, she’s doing things to satisfy her personal aspirations and she does not ever leave the Heavenly Father out of any equation; she starts her day with HIM and she ends it with HIM. As with anyone else, she has experienced challenges but the beautiful attribute within Dale is that she does not dwell on them (past events) rather she forges forward to live for the day before her and is faith-filled about tomorrow. She has been strengthened, as HE expects. She trusts HIS guidance and wisdom every step of the way. That’s the epitome of living a Christian life.

Dale is retired and spends her retirement years doting on her Family which includes her husband (Harold), her children and grandchildren. If you ask her about her passions, she’ll quickly say, supporting children and the underserved. She believes that children will thrive well with consistent love and support. Dale volunteers to help with children-related programs at her church and she has volunteered at other churches where she attended while living in other cities across the U.S. Have I mentioned that she loves to cook and cooks very well? Well—I must say that she often receives requests from her Family, including her church Family. She does not turn them down because her heart is made of gold and she delights in putting smiles on others’ faces. That’s just the kind of heart she has.

During a recent conversation with her, Dale said, “It’s not what you go through but how you go through.” She does not believe in counting problems rather Blessings. She believes that if people keep GOD at the head of all things, there is no insurmountable mountain. She’s right. In life, many things don’t go according to plan. When you fall, get back up. When you stumble, re-gain your balance. Setbacks are normal; how you respond is important. It’s seemingly easier to go down the hill than up it but the view is beautiful and much better at the top. Always believe that it’s worth the climb.

{Pictured: Mrs. Dale Monica Allen}
{Pictured: Mr. & Mrs. Harold Allen}

No matter how difficult her day may have been, Dale gives the people (in need) her very best effort to create and maintain a positive environment. It takes a strong Faith to do that.

I proudly inform you that the extraordinarily encouraging, distinguished woman whom I just described is my sister. I’ve honored many deserving women in the world and Dale certainly is a woman who made the list based on her contributions to people and communities for many years. She never boasts nor brags about it. She just keeps on serving where she’s needed, whenever she can.

I wanted to publicly honor my sister, Mrs. Dale Monica Allen. She is imbued with unmatched, supporting qualities. I share her characteristics with you in hopes that you are innovated by the few of the reasons why she is being honored. You can experience more of her qualities by listening to her podcast. She unselfishly touches so many lives. New Monica – Podcasting With Purpose episodes are available weekly. However, previous episodes are always accessible. Dale’s audio podcast can be accessed by going to:

*Once you click on the above link, just scroll down to the desired episode. Her podcast is hosted by Anchor and it’s also accessible via Spotify, Breaker, Stitcher, Apple Podcasts, RadioPublic, Google Podcasts and just about all digital media outlets.

Dale strives daily to be greater than her yesterday, to serve others with an unselfish heart. All of us should be doing that. We are powerful beyond measure. GOD empowers each of us with a Divine gift; therefore, we have a natural resource—ourself. Don’t play small; serve where you can. I encourage you from the depths of my heart, particularly during this holiday season, a season when many of us celebrate the birth of LORD AND SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST.

Honoring a deserving woman,

Historically Black Colleges and Universities {HBCUs} are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act in 1964 with the intention to primarily serve the African-American community. Change has come. With time, change will come. Other races and ethnicities attend HBCUs and have been now for decades. There are 101 HBCUs across the U.S. and the U.S. Virgin Islands, including public and private institutions, according to the Department of Education.

There are many milestones and initiatives since the establishment of HBCUs. There is one that I proudly say that I joined as recently as days ago. Founded in 2017, HBCUstartups is the “first online marketplace for HBCU businesses to sell their products to the world. HBCUstartups’ purpose is to provide more recognition for HBCU student and alumni entrepreneurs and to also educate people on the importance of buying from these entrepreneurs.” I encourage you to join the HBCUstartups community. There are membership levels: Client/Customers, Affiliates and Vendors. My co-author, Marshall Feaster and I, are registered as a Vendor. Our first product listed is our book, I Know Why Mama Cried: A Memoir. And there are so many other great products for purchase at reasonable prices and more will be added. With the holidays among us, the marketplace is a great option to shop while supporting HBCUs! Shop for any occasion!

What Makes A Good Celebration? Good Food & Good People! by Goya Spry

{All of my articles are ad-supported.}

Sunday, December 1, 2019

The below menu was provided by my sister, Marshall Feaster, and the dishes were prepared by her, her son-in-law, “Red”, and her children. The following two photos reflect what their Thanksgiving dinner looked like before the last drop was devoured. What a spread!

{Desserts by “Red”: My nephew-in-law is one of the BEST cooks/bakers that I know and I’m one of many who loves it when he cooks.}

Thanksgiving Day has come and gone and there are residuals. The residuals are perfecto and no one has complaints. Great tastebud memories! Great memories on a special day! Sharing a festive day of Thankfulness with Family and Friends is a way to add great memories to the album. It can be exhausting having a good time with the people whom we care about, entertaining and cooking. I LOVE that type of exhaustion. We do it because we love unconditionally.

Calories were not counted—oh no! The holidays are not a time to count calories. That’s how it goes and let’s not apologize to the bulge after the fact. Holidays are meant to be celebrated and good food is the highlight of it all! We can get back to our exercise routine soon enough.

I have chefs in my Family. It’s not an official profession for any of them but no one would know the better. From the northeast to the southeast, my Family buzz today is that there was not one dissatisfied palate in any of the homes on Thanksgiving Day. They took pictures for me to include in today’s blog. Get ready! The photos will make you hungry.

My sister, Dale Allen, prepared the entire Thanksgiving Day dinner for her Family: ham, dressing, potato salad, corn, giblet gravy, collard greens, macaroni & cheese, cornish hens with mushrooms, sweet potato pies, sweet potato surprise, and “homemade” cranberry sauce. Her Family does not ever hesitate to go to her table. Dale provided the following nine photos of her Family dinner.

WOW! I’m fortunate to have such phenomenal cooks in my Family—women and men. My son, Allan, also cooks. After taking culinary art classes and observing his parents, sister, brother-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends cook over the years, he’s become quite the sought after chef to prepare a few of his fave menu items every Thanksgiving and other times in the year: turkey, lima beans and steaks. We love it when he cooks them—always tender and perfectly seasoned. Do I cook? Yes; I do. But I didn’t cook this Thanksgiving. However, I did try a new recipe called Deep Fried Sweet Potato Bites for the first time. They turned out very well! Thank you, Aisha!

⭐️Goya’s Honoring Women Series: Who Is Being Honored?

{All of my articles are ad-supported.}

Tuesday, November 19, 2019

Honoring women from all walks of life from around the globe is my pleasure. So many women have done extraordinary things for many people at large and many are continually moving the needle to innovate and inspire others {men, women and youth} to pursue their dreams and aspirations while demonstrating the importance of helping others along their journey. In my view, no journey is successful if we do not help elevate others along our way. The feeling of being a conduit for others’ “lovely day” is quite rewarding for me!

A friend of mine and I discussed a recent episode we had seen on one of our favorite TV shows, CBS Sunday Morning, hosted by Jane Pauley. One of the episodes was presented by special correspondent, James Brown. The name of the episode was “Driving Force”. Brown interviewed veteran women “on the green”, as sports analysts and golfers call it, a golf course in East Canton, Ohio. The women, who had served in the military, are members of Clearview Hope, the first golf program for veterans, designed to heal service members. That premise alone has me feeling so very proud of them. They are paying it forward on a grand scale. I applaud the veteran women!

http://www.clearview-gc.com

Special Correspondent James Brown continued his report about a very special veteran, Renee Powell. I decided to include the video {at end of this article} of that interview. Watch it and feel as impressed as I am. It’s a story that I could not pass over; I was compelled to blog about it. Powell and her Family history give new meaning to strength, tenacity, determination, and the power of a Family Legacy.

After sacrificing so much for our country and to have the inclination and determination to continue to serve is more than reasons to appreciate the women of Clearview Hope and to honor Renee Powell for her unwavering, selfless contributions to the game of golf, female athletes, and society as a whole.

*Watch the below CBS Sunday Morning 6:37-minute video and get to know one of the best examples of an innovator and influencer. Golf is the backdrop but it really is not about golf.

⭐️ Sisterly Authors: Goya Spry and Marshall Feaster

{All of my articles are ad-supported.}

Saturday, November 16, 2019

“We cried privately for her, wondering where her tears were coming from, but deep in our hearts, it didn’t matter where they came from because Mama’s pain was ours. We wanted to help but didn’t know how.”

“I didn’t know it then, but I was to become the anchor of the top half of the bottom six of Mama’s twelve children. The bottom six were a lot closer, fought harder, and grew to expect more from ourselves, from others, and from the world around us.”

Those quotes are from our book as published authors, I Know Why Mama Cried: A Memoir. It’s our first book in a series. My sister, Marshall Feaster, and I will continue writing in a memoir format. In our first book, she and I revisited our past, starting with our childhood. Truths are told, painful and triumphant ones. Not wanting to cause harm or pain, it’s quite a challenge facing old unpleasantries, recalling family events, unpleasant and joyful ones. Marshall & I know that so many people will be able to relate to what happened in our family and some people have endured worse experiences. We decided to put ours in print as a resource for those who need to read about an extraordinary, exceptional family who weathered the storm. Our story is jaw dropping and some accounts will leave readers speechless. Our book is undoubtedly the holy grail that serves as a motif for a purpose greater than ourselves.

Some people will question how we came from an unlikely place to where we are now. The valley can be a difficult and dark place but because we kept our eyes on the mountaintop, as our Mother taught and showed us by examples, we have the victory! The compelling documented experiences that are noted in Book 1 are shared for core reasons that surround one purpose. We have an extraordinary family; there’s nothing average about us.

Marshall and I thank “RH” who was the first to share her review. She sent this heartfelt message to us:

1. “Thank you so much. Thank both of you for putting into words the struggles, dedication and determination it takes to survive and thrive after abuse from the person that you look to for protection, love and comfort. Abuse is an insidious, destructive and crushing thing to live in but when it comes from a parent (if not for stronger forces) crushes a person from which they cannot overcome. You and Marshall are showing that it can be overcome and you can thrive….and you are not alone! I truly would love to spend some time with Marshall. ❤️” -RH

2. “I received your book this afternoon and it is definitely jaw dropping. It arrived late this afternoon and I’m half way through the book because I couldn’t put it down. I already see why you are such a strong woman and raised kids to be the same. I can hardly wait to finish it. Thanks for sharing your family journey. Support Others “Out Loud” by Goya Spry

{All of my publications are ad-supported.}

Monday, October 28, 2019

The words that we impart, the words that we put in print, the actions that we take can be powerful. The power can range from damaging to empowering and effective. What end of the spectrum are you on when you are communicating with and about others? What are you really doing to support your family, friends, colleagues and anyone who crosses your path? I’m making reference to encouraging, sharing advice based on your experiences and expertise, extending referrals and recommendations.

A good friend and I talk often about the power of supporting others. We are what I call “veteran supporters”. We love doing it and we know that it can change lives. Be supportive of others the way you would want them to be supportive of you. Do it at home, at work, at church, whenever the opportunity arises. My belief is that we have a responsibility to serve others. Supporting is certainly a form of serving.

Many of you know that I have an audio podcast. The content, just as my articles, is always positive and innovative, never adversarial nor without merit. The purpose is to provide a consistent platform of support for my international listeners and to catapult them to a higher level of motivation and to stimulate them with the belief that winning in life is not a myth nor a single model just for some people. Everyone has the privilege and ability to win. We can all tap into it with the right mindset, consistently working hard to attain goals and aspirations and by maintaining faith.

From The Great News Desk!

I know Why Mama Cried – A Memoir, written by my sister, Marshall Feaster, and I will be available for purchase before Christmas! More details are forthcoming. It’s our pleasure to share with you that it is our first book in a series. Yes; we will continue to write for as long as our Heavenly Father says so. Our memoir tells a compelling story. Many interesting memoirs have been written over time and what is unique about ours is that we imparted experiences that are jaw-dropping, experiences that most people would not share. We want our readers to know that so much is possible when you trust in the higher power. You just have to tap into it. In our memoir, you’ll recognize the beauty in the details which equates to an enormous portion of strength and a hefty serving of unshakable faith. We anticipate and appreciate your support in advance.

⭐️Goya’s Honoring “Women” Series: Who Is Being Honored?

{All of my publications are ad-supported.}

Sunday, October 13, 2019

JOYA COUSIN is a fine artist, a portrait painter. Let’s just start there. Her work is extraordinary and exquisite. When she’s in front of an easel, an exceptional creation emerges. With a delightful appeal, Joya’s art easily appeals the eye to study every brush stroke and chosen hues. Admiring her contribution to art and realizing that her gift is bringing joy to many all over the world, it was easy to select Joya as my next Honoree.

After completing her undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Accounting, Joya landed a few positions in earlier years in her field of study at notably, successful companies. Were any of them to be her destiny? Eventually, she decided to be faithful to her heart’s desire, her dream. Joya returned to crafting unique art pieces. She comes alive just as her art does and it’s evident in her work. Even as an amateur, as I certainly issue no claim to be an art connoisseur, I see sensuality, femininity, and the promise of endless pleasure when I see her art landscape. Her work unequivocally captures the emotion of her models. I experience pleasure when I see her paintings and apparently many people do, internationally. I have one word for Joya: Wowsa!

Joya’s magnificent art pieces can be seen on social media: Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Originally from the Caribbean, she and her husband currently live in Vannes France.

Joya, Thank you for sharing YOU and welcome to my respected, publicly-shared list of deserving women from around the globe!

{All publications are ad-supported.}

“It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it.” Those are the words that CeCe Winans sang so eloquently in one of her hit songs. For the love of GOD, it’ll always be worth it. Shedding blood, Jesus paid the cost for us on the cross. With that foundation, I’m sharing this brief story about a man who knows up close and personal that life can be challenging but faith and trust in GOD will see you through all of it.

{Coach Lamonte Odums: Picture was retrieved from social media.}

Through his past, personal adversities and trials which he openly talks about and can be accessed on his social media pages and other places online, Coach Lamonte Odums has learned to trust GOD’s plan for his life and also for his Family. He has a strong faith and stands on GOD’s word. He allowed GOD to take his heart and lead his life to a place where he’s needed. I, without hesitation, select Coach Lamonte as my next Honoree. I have come to know him by watching him on a CBS television morning show and via social media. With a sincere spirit, he consistently imparts encouraging and inspiring words to the general public. He often speaks lovingly about his family. Besides being a man who speaks purposely to make a difference in others’ lives, he’s also quite humorous. Perhaps unbeknownst to him, many people depend on him to bring laughter to their hearts and spiritual food to their spirit simultaneously. Everyone does not have the ability to do that. His purpose is clear, and he’s walking the walk while talking the talk.

{Coach Lamonte & Les Brown, A Renowned Motivational Speaker, Author and Radio Show Host}

{Anthony Hamilton & Coach Lamonte}

Coach Lamonte is married to Stacia, father of six children and grandfather of four. He loves to spend time with his family, read, eat, and make people smile.

{Pictures of Coach Lamonte & Stacia were retrieved from social media posts.}

Watch the below video. Coach Lamonte had an intimate, unfiltered conversation with Kim Jacobs, host of the Kim Jacobs Show.

*Coach Lamonte often posts messages on social media. Follow him. His messages are always inspirational, informative and innovative.

Facebook: Coach Lamonte

Twitter: @CoachLaMonte

Instagram: @coachlamonte

*With a blessing from GOD, I believe that Coach Lamonte will be on a stage that allows him to make people smile on a larger scale that only GOD can assign. He’s doing so much for so many already and there’s an increase coming—much more from Coach Lamonte. His light will continue to shine. He will be embraced as the Holy Spirit dwells in him and makes HIS power known. Many will be touched over and over again.

⭐️SPECIAL EDITION: A Legend In The Making by Goya Spry

[All publications are ad-supported.]

Thursday, September 19, 2019

This is the first Special Edition publication for Plugging In With GPS™️. What makes this edition special is that it’s about a man who is undeniably on the path of becoming a legend and not just because of my evaluation or judgment but because he is popularly accepted and admired for an extraordinary basketball skill that has been identified. People have taken notice over the years and they have not stopped noticing. Phillip still has game.

If you haven’t heard about Phillip “Charlie” Currence, maybe it’s because you know him as “Hook Shot Charlie”. I recently wrote about him. [Article is still available on this website.] Because he has so much personality—pleasant demeanor, possesses a strong innovative spirit, loves serving his community, mentors youth/men and loves life, various media stages are attracted to Phillip and rightfully so.

The below interview, conducted by Mai-Lis Bahr, People of Charlotte founder, took place several years ago. It is a sure-fire way to learn more about Phillip and how he came to be the infamous “Hook Shot Charlie” and the supporting he does for his community. He has not changed over the years; his basketball skills are sharper than ever and he believes strongly in the power of serving others, lending a helping hand. As Mai-Lis has shared during her television report, Phillip ages backwards. I say his energy mimics hundreds of thousands of electron volts. Imagine that for a man who is 61 years old. He’s fit, relentless and more importantly, he has the right perspective about LIFE.

Writing every shot down in a journal, Phillip has hooked over 1,000,000 shots in seven years. Wilson Basketball heard about him and sent him a basketball with a chip in it to help keep up with number of baskets. Imagine that! Click on the below link and be intrigued. A video is included that shows Phillip in action with his hooks.

The Mai-Lis Bahr & Phillip Interview: A Must Read. 👇🏼

https://www.peopleofclt.com/post/hook-shot-charlie-hooks-basketball-charlotte

What’s in Phillip’s future? What are his goals and aspirations?

Phillip said, “I want to be the face of a product, reflecting the loyalty and trustworthiness that I have shown to every employer. When I commit, I commit.” Phillip has high work ethics and never practices any substandard. He should be viewed as a honorary member of a prestigious group that empowers others because that’s the hook for “Hook Shot Charlie”.

currencecharlie@gmail.com

*His professional profile is on LinkedIn. Search for Phillip “Charlie” Currence.

*He’s on social media: Instagram, Facebook & Twitter. Search for Charlie Currence or Hook Shot Charlie.

I pay homage to a legend in the making, Phillip “Charlie” Currence, the forever “Hook Shot Charlie”.

Cheers to what’s to come!

⭐️Goya’s Honoring Women Series: The ”Unsung Woman”

{All publications are ad-supported.}

Monday, September 16, 2019

Yes; I’m honoring the “unsung woman“. The unsung woman is a woman who is not celebrated, not praised nor acclaimed but should be. She is the woman who is looked over time and time again. She’s often taken for granted. I chose not to include pictures of any unsung woman. What would be the point? I refuse to compromise the integrity of any woman.

The unsung woman may not be noticed out loud, not given her flowers nor the accolades she deserves. Yet, she may be the reason why other women are celebrated and praised. She works behind the scenes and ensures that all goes well for the celebrated woman. Think about that.

She’s the wife of the man who doesn’t start his workday without her and stops him from leaving the house wearing brown socks with his black suit and helps him find his car keys and wallet while she {herself} is trying to get out the door to be on time for work. She’s the Mother of children who are succeeding in school, who wouldn’t have gotten to ballet, soccer, basketball and football practices without her sacrificing her schedule to make sure that they were not late nor missed a game. The unsung woman is the woman who prepares meals daily and not one, who ate every crumb, said ‘thank you’ before leaving the table and didn’t hang around to help tidy the kitchen and dining room. She never complains about it; she is simply happy that they enjoyed the meal and encouraged them to prepare for the next day. The unsung woman is the woman who wakes up everyone in the house on Sunday morning and speaks with conviction, going from bedroom to bedroom to awaken the Loves of her life with, “Wake up. Get moving so you’ll have time to get a bite to eat before we leave. We can’t be late for church.”

The unsung woman is the executive secretary who keeps the CEO on point with his board meetings, agendas, conferences, business travel, routes calls, and remembers his wedding anniversary, children’s, mother’s and mother-in-law’s birthdays to help save him from embarrassment. The unsung woman is the woman responsible for keeping the building clean and sanitized. Employees rush by her to get to their offices or to go home for the day without so much as a Good morning, How’s your Family or Have a good evening.

The unsung woman is the stay-at-home Mom—if only people knew that a stay-at-home Mom has the hardest job in the world. She wears several interchangeable hats: Nurse, Driver, Teacher, Cook, Counselor, Custodian, Team Mom, Secretary, School Volunteer, and she can easily be regarded as a high-level Motivator on different levels {from toddler level to adult level}.

The unsung woman is the teacher who is the reason why children get their first view of life away from Mommy and Daddy. She cleans up behind their spills and accidents. She uses her personal money to buy supplies for her students and the classroom. Learning cannot/will not be delayed for any child because they don’t have what s/he needs. She protects students from the bullies and stays after school for the child who needs extra help to learn or requires a pep talk. She’s the person who helps children acquire knowledge and self-discipline yet one of the most underpaid professionals.

The unsung woman is the woman who has gone to hell and back and may have been burned but her scars aren’t visible because she lives by the survivors’ anthem: Only The Strong Survives. The unsung woman is dedicated to a fault, who won’t turn her back on the people she cares about.

The unsung woman is the woman who responds with “I’m fine” when asked, “Are you okay?” She always wants to appear that she has it all together. She knows that she has to keep going. She knows what will happen if she drops the ball. She’d rather be tired and inwardly disgusted while not pursuing her own dreams and aspirations and have everyone in her life on point than to watch them unravel. It’s time for her song.

I could go on and on about unsung women. I’ll stop here because you get the picture. I’ve made my point.

I crown every unsung woman with love and compassion. I don’t know you by name but I see you. Remember; Your mind is your control tower.

*Celebrate the women in your life. Don’t take them for granted. Give them their flowers while they can still smell them.

I celebrate “out loud” my Daughter {Allison Spry Waymyers}, my Sisters, Sister-in-law, Nieces, Friends and all women across the globe. May your life be filled with good health, joy and peace as you soldier on, unsung or sung. Take special care of yourself. Bless your journey!

Phillip “Hook Shot Charlie” Currence by Goya Spry

PHILLIP “HOOK SHOT CHARLIE” CURRENCE is the man seated beside the basketball on the bench. I agree; he does look debonair. Does he play basketball? Can he really take it to the hoop? Well—read on and experience several golden nuggets about Phillip or you may call him Charlie. He’s not an ordinary man rather extraordinary. Phillip has a sophisticated charm and he’s a gracious gentleman. The deserving compliments do not end there. His repertoire of special and unique treasures are perhaps beyond the expectation of an average imagination.

Phillip, in fact, does play basketball. So don’t let the suit fool you. The things that he can do with a basketball is far from being anything that many people can do. He’s known as “Hook Shot Charlie” for good reasons. At 61, he’s more athletic and active than some teenagers. I, along with many others, celebrate his tenacity and energetic spirit. You will see his skills and flexibility in the videos below. Each one is less than a minute long. Go ahead and be amazed!

Phillip Is The Talk of The Town

Phillip has a buzz surrounding his basketball skills and the well-known name that goes with it, “Hook Shot Charlie”. So it’s no surprise that PBS-Charlotte highlighted him on one of their shows, Carolina Impact. Click on the below link to see the video.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gEKITDDxftg

{Everyone knows the “Hook Shot Charlie” pose!}

Spirit & Success-Driven

Speaking of “spirit”, Phillip has the ability to engage listeners with words of wisdom, inspiration and innovation. His conversations may include basketball and other sports interests but it’s unlikely that you’ll walk away with just game highlights or sports lingo; Phillip will encourage you to reach for the stars, to never give up on your dreams and to help others when you can. He has no default language. Phillip gives it to you straight. A few of his life objectives are to take advantage of opportunities to guide others to be better than their yesterday, help others along their journey, and to make the most of life “now”.

{Construction Project: Phillip has lended his time to Habitat For Humanity.}

*Seeking Endorsements & Sponsors

Phillip has so many impressive personal and professional attributes. He could easily represent any company to promote and support a product. He certainly has the demeanor to elevate a company/product to another level. It is his goal to acquire opportunities to endorse a company and/or receive sponsorships. *His contact information is at the end of this article. Connect with him; share this information with your connections who can present an opportunity to him.

⭐️Goya’s Honoring “Men” Series: Who Is Being Honored Today?

{All publications are ad-supported.}

Thursday, September 5, 2019

I implemented Goya’s Honoring Women Series in January 2019. I’ve written about remarkable, accomplished women who have contributed “positively” to their families, community, city, state, country and the world. My purpose is to embrace them with appreciation, encouragement and to empower and innovate other women, particularly girls and young women. I believe that supporting others “out loud” is important; it is necessary. It also informs others about some women who are “unsung”, who are not celebrated as deserved.

*It goes without saying that women are not the only ones who deserve to be honored. There are so many men who are deserving as well. Therefore, I chose to start a series in their honor. I choose not to leave men out. There have been countless contributions from men who, without compromise, served and still serve a greater principle. I know I will never run out of Honorees as there are so many strong men in various aspects of life who display exemplary character. You know who they are. Honor them with me.

Today, I honor the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. He served from 2009-2017. With political leaders, there will be controversy surrounding their political decisions. It comes with the territory. It’s expected. I will not delve in that area of his leadership on this stage. However, there is an area of Barack Obama’s life that most people, if not all people, will not/cannot debate. That area is his Family life. Obama has never been shy nor held back with expressing his love for his wife Michelle and his two daughters, Malia and Sasha. He does not just talk about them to impress people; he shows the world that his Family is his priority.

Family is everything. Let’s just start there. There will be good days and bad days in every family but if the foundation is solid, there will be no sustainable cracks in the family structure. Obama, on many occasions, publicly informed the world that he will protect his family at all costs. After being sworn in the office of presidency in 2009, it was not long after when he made a statement that his family is off limits, if there is an itch to speak derogatorily about them or to be unkind in any way. He set the stage quickly.

Obama did not purposely set out to be an example for other families—for all men to lead their own families. He only was being the man that he knew he had to be for his “girls” as he so often affectionately addressed them. But it was not long when he realized that people all over the world, particularly men, needed a positive role model, an example of how to be a family man who protected, provided, respected, and cherished their wife and children. Unequivocally, Obama did that before and while serving his country as the President and he has not stopped. He’s an actively loving husband and father. It’s not in his character to be anything less.

There have been men who have admitted that it was Obama who changed the way they perceived “family” and that it was crucial to be the “family man” that their family deserves—to honor women. That alone is reason enough to honor Barack Obama for his contribution to families around the world. Thank you, Mr. Obama!

The below video is the final minutes of President Obama’s Farewell Address in 2017.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uWRmBjFxttc

Obama is not out of public sight; he has an active Twitter account where he posts messages frequently and other media outlets. He speaks at events, supports organizations (especially those involving young people and education) and he makes appearances for many causes.

Obama is a “people person”, a man who loves everything surrounding the concept of “Family” and improving life for all. He’s also a man who enjoys life. He recently posted his and Michelle’s Summer PlayList 2019. Ironically, but perhaps not by coincidence, he listed 44 songs. I plan to listen to every one of them.

{All images are posted on the Internet. Image including Barack Obama’s comment along with his Summer PlayList 2019 is posted on Twitter.}

When we honor deserving women, let’s proactively also honor deserving men. They exist all over the world…all walks of life. We should support them while keeping them encouraged.

Honoring Deserving Men,

⭐️Goya’s Honoring Women Series: Who Is Being Honored Today?

{All publications are ad-supported.}

Sunday, September 1, 2019

I have honored over a dozen women since I began my series of honoring women from all over the world, no matter their race, religion, career path or political ideology. My criteria includes what the woman positively contributes to family, her city, state, country and the world. Women from all walks of life are represented on this platform. With so many phenomenal women in the world, I’ll never run short of Honorees. I would not be honest if I give the impression that it was easy to honor today’s Honoree, the super-woman who is the epitome of “Honor”, “Grace” and “Humility”.

On this first day of September 2019, I honor the woman who was undoubtedly chosen by GOD to be a guardian for many, especially for her family. Sometimes, we take others for granted. Over the years, today’s Honoree has been, but of course not intentionally; nevertheless, it happens. We often go about our day thinking that the people in our lives today will be available to us tomorrow. It’s an innocent forethought. However, there’s no wisdom anywhere in it.

I’m going to cut to the chase now and name my Honoree. She is MARSHALL FEASTER. Marshall is exceptional. I choose to give Marshall flowers now while enlightening the world about the woman she is. Marshall is not a public-type person; she’s not a woman who stages herself for bright lights and attention from the world, not even from her family. However, I could not continue on in my life without sharing “out loud” what I personally know about her. As the cliché goes, I’m telling you what I know, not what I heard.

One of the extraordinary attributes about Marshall is that she tirelessly and effortlessly places others whom she loves on her exclusive stage; i.e., she is the biggest cheerleader for her family. Oh you won’t hear her speak of her family members in a public way but behind the scenes, she’s working her magic in support of them. She has the ability to move mountains that may have been visible to others but invisible to her because her mustard seed faith takes center stage in all situations. She’s the calm for her loved ones’ storms. She’s the ever-present supporter, and no sports cheerleader could match the life-size cheer in her heart for her family. Marshall could very well be in the midst of her own personal storm but you would never know it. She forges forward like the woman of valor she repeatedly displays. Her strength is beyond that of human understanding. Her patience seems to never fade like mist in the air.

{Pictured: Marshall won the title Miss Senior at her high school and was a cheerleader. She was known to be smart, studious and often tutored her peers.}

*It’s appropriate to quote Brazilian Novelist, Paulo Coelho:

“I have seen many storms in my life. Most storms have caught me by surprise, so I had to learn very quickly to look further and understand that I am not capable of controlling the weather, to exercise the art of patience and to respect the fur of nature.”

Marshall has the ability to juggle a hundred tasks {so to speak} in one day. She’s retired from government employment but you wouldn’t think it because her day begins often times like an active professional employee. Her day normally begins before 7:00AM and rarely ends before 8:00PM. She unselfishly assists so many people throughout her day, including me. She’s one of the most determined and highly-skilled women I know. Unofficially, she’s a career consultant, personal advisor, project manager, counselor and so much more. Her abilities are unmatched because she is robed with several textbook intelligence levels: Tactical, Conceptual, Elite, and Conscious Intelligence. Above all, she has an unwavering belief in Jesus Christ.

Marshall is the phenomenal woman that Maya Angelou depicts in her classic poem, Phenomenal Woman. The world often does not credit women as deserved. The inner woman in Marshall is beautiful—a rare beauty indeed. Her beauty encompasses not only what Man sees outwardly but the majesty in her heart. Yes; I personally know her. I’ve known her all of my life.

A Gaelic Blessing: Marshall, May a rainbow follow each rain just for you. May the hand of a friend always be near you. And may God fill your heart with blessings to cheer you.

I look forward to continuing this life journey with you. I’m grateful that GOD chose us to be sisters.

{Pictured: Marshall’s smile opens up the window of her soul.}

One of Marshall’s favorite poems is an allegorical text written in prose. It is none other than the very popular, Footprints. It’s also known as Footprints In The Sand.

Have you ever met anyone who is always ready to assist others in anyway she can, oftentimes sacrificing her own desires, completely believing that her desires will be met in time under the hand of GOD? Well, I just introduced you to a person just like that. I have given you a glimpse of GOD’S grace, Marshall Feaster.

Giving flowers {now} to a deserving woman,

Goya’s Honoring Women Series: And The Honor Goes to…

{My webpage is ad-supported. You’ll see them throughout my article.}

Monday, August 12, 2019

Women are achieving things like never before on all levels in various career fields: politics, education, journalism, aerospace, military branches, corporate execs, literary work, entrepreneurship, science, medical, sports and more, and I certainly do not want to exclude the phenomenal stay at home Moms. Honoring Women is a part of my blog platform and I’ll never run out of women to honor, from all over the globe, all walks of life, to select from. Women are brilliant and I’m going to help spread the news about their accomplishments and influence in this ever-changing world.

An Olympian Is On Fire

Nailed it! Those are the two words that reporters were shouting while watching the 22-year old Olympian Friday, August 9th. She went where no other gymnast has gone before. She continually makes history. Her flawless athleticism has won her a sixth national title. The young woman is extraordinary. Who is she? She’s a hot topic in sports, the GOAT gymnast, none other than SIMONE BILES.

Simone’s Two Historical Milestones Happened Last Week

1. Simone is the “first woman in history” to nail a double double landing on the beam. That was not a typo; Yes—double double landing. 2. She also defied gravity by becoming the first woman to land a triple double on the floor exercise. If you missed it, the videos are below.

Simone’s Insane Dismount On Beam

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vNlist0lfr4

Simone’s Insane Floor Exercise

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=u9r0T5vmvFs

“You’ll go your whole entire career and everybody will tell you that you’re great. But the minute you say you’re good, [people are] like, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re so cocky! Cancel her,’ or this or that,” Biles said. “There should be times where we can celebrate whenever we do a good routine. Or if you’ve been on a winning streak for a year. Or so forth. I think it’s something you should have pride in. Not be cocky about it, but have pride in it“, said Simone. She has every right to be proud of herself. And with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics right around the corner, you can expect Simone to make us proud as she represents Team USA

The world will be watching. Bring more medals home, Simone!

Encouraging All Women,

Former Football Player: Physically Paralyzed, But Oh So Mentally Strong by Goya Spry

{My webpage is ad-supported. You’ll see them throughout my article.}

Sunday, August 4, 2019

“I just knew it was going to take time and it was just a process I had to go through. So, I’m still going through that process as we speak, and I’m gonna come out on top.” Someone else may have given up after a paralysis diagnosis but not this former college football player. A Baton Rouge, Louisiana native still has breath in his body and that’s all that he needs to keep living his best life.

DEVON GALES is not an average, ordinary young man. In fact, he is extraordinarily strong and has an exceptional outlook on life. Devon is one of the most determined young men that I know and I wanted you to get to know him by reading this blog. But I issue a warning. It’s unlikely that you’ll ever complain about what you cannot do ever again nor give up on yourself after reading about Devon. That’s my hope.

I remember Devon’s accident very well. It remains vivid while I write at this moment. My Family and I were sitting in the football stands at the Georgia Bulldogs’ Sanford Stadium in Athens, GA. Devon and my son, Allan Spry, were teammates for the SWAC Championship and Bayou Classic team, Southern University and A&M College-Baton Rouge aka the SU Jags. The anticipation for SU to compete against University of Georgia aka the Georgia Bulldogs, a SEC championship team, was high-spirited amongst the fans on both sides of the 50-yd line. The stadium was swollen with Family, fans and curious spectators four years ago.

As any contact sport, there will be injuries–some more serious than others. Coaches and players can only prepare as best as they can to minimize the injuries. Players strengthen and condition their bodies in preparation to defeat the opponent and leave the field still standing. On that game day in Athens, there was a hit that knocked a player down. Staff rushed on the field. The player was not moving. The teammates took a knee while everyone there held their breath, praying that the SU Jag wide receiver gets up as he lay motionless. It was one of the longest heart wrenching moments that will probably ever be felt at Sanford Stadium. There was silence in the stands while fans awaited outcomes after Devon was carried on a stretcher. Hearts dropped. My heart skipped many beats that day while awaiting results. As a Mother of a football player, I had fervently prayed not only for my son to never incur a serious injury but no player on his team nor the opposing team.

Devon’s head-to-head injury resulted in a spinal injury, a paralyzing collision. He suffered several neck fractures. He was only able to move his upper body. The doctors reported that he was able to move his hands immediately following the hit. He underwent emergency surgery.

Unlikely Brothers, Devon Gales, SU and Marshall Morgan, UGA

Devon and Marshall are lifetime brothers. The below video reflects how two athletes support the other. It doesn’t matter that they played for different teams. I called them lifetime, honorary members of the football fraternity.

Bleacher Report:

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2572381-devon-gales-injury-updates-on-southern-university-wrs-status-and-return

Giving Up, Giving In Was Not An Option For Devon

The SU team had to travel back to Baton Rouge but no doubt their return was solemn and filled with a sense of helplessness, not wanting to leave their teammate behind in Athens. But Devon had to begin a long road with doctors and therapists. He would not be leaving Georgia any time soon. The GA Bulldogs coaches, staff and the entire “Bulldogs Family” immediately and enthusiastically stepped in with every ounce of support for Devon and his Family. They were remarkably supportive and never wavered in support. UGA went on record without hesitation that they would be supporting Devon in every way, unselfishly using their resources. Their heartfelt gestures are ones for the “athletic books”.

Four Years Later and Devon Said, “I Am Not Broken”

Devon has been in therapy for years now and his smile has never disappeared. He is one of the greatest examples that an “incident” may alter you physically but it does not have to affect you mentally and spiritually; you control that. You decide how you move on in life.
